Caught myself in the rear-view mirror
Remember the path we left behind
The trail of crumbs, the steps we traced
That trail seems longer now
From the present point of view
But it seems that we survived those straits
Whether we endure
The distance ahead
Caught myself glancing over my shoulder
There was some black face that looked
An awful like yours among the crowd
Yet I shook away the memory
Along with the stress I was reliving
But it looks like nothing was ever there
Whether we endure
The distance ahead
Neither of us shall know
We may have tossed leaden phrases
That bore blood to flesh
Blurred their eyes with tears
But what use is there
In reliving those years
Caught myself staring back in the mirror
Some sallow soul made a gesture
That asked me for forgiveness
In the corner of its eye
I swore I saw the remnants of you
But I turned away as soon as I came to
Whether we endure
The distance ahead
Neither of us shall know
But look at how far we’ve come
And together how we’ve grown
