Writing is performative. Whether performed by the author or the audience, the medium of writing is, fundamentally, the textual embodiment of Voice. The written voice is the means to indicate distinctive qualities between the self and others: It is a means to display power; it is used by the audience to emulate themselves through the written word; it is the empowerment of self through presentation and memory; it is the breath of life through sound between the communicator and reader; it produces the chance for dependency upon others or vulnerability to them; it is the opposition to death — to preserve a people, species, and/or environment even long after they have been physically vanquished by time. Through the utilization of the written voice — through its lyricism, rhythm, and the orotund use of silence, one can effectively empower both themselves and others.
